The Wild Beyond

himalayan tahr

The pinnacle of alpine hunting in New Zealand is the Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus). Sent as a gift from the Duke of Bedford and released in 1904 tahr have flourished and currently occupy the middle of the South Island both on the East and West coasts, which is almost entirely covered by our hunting concession we hold directly with the New Zealand government.

We offer helicopter accessed wilderness hunts on our public land concession, which are adventurous enough to rivel any North American sheep or Mountain goat hunt, taking you into some of the most dramatic scenery New Zealand has to offer. We also offer private land hunts on two of the premier tahr hunting ranches in New Zealand, accessed by 4WD vehicle and staying in authentic but comfortable ranch accommodation, both of these hunting options are truly a hunt to remember and always a clients trip highlight.

We are well regarded as New Zealand’s tahr hunting specialists by consistently harvesting only truly mature bulls with trophy class horns, with the capes being at their best from late May through August.

Endless Adventure

The Backcountry

A Southern Lakes Safaris specialty, these are the hunts we live for. Flying into our public land concession, situated in New Zealand’s most remote and scenic public land hunting grounds, we’ve spent our whole lives gaining the knowledge to be able to make our clients successful in harvesting a truly mature tahr or chamois on public land.

We can adapt these trips to virtually any level of fitness and sense of adventure, but a good base level of fitness will see you enjoy this hunt soo much more. We are proud to say we are the only New Zealand outfitter serious enough about mountain hunting, that we have our concession directly with the New Zealand Government, and that our guides have high level avalanche qualifications and experience.

The Gorillas in the mist, as Cam refers to bull Tahr. They may not appear to be athletic but as quickly as you see them, Tahr can fade off up into the mountain mist without a trace. These are solid animals requiring a well-placed shot to anchor them. The final stare down is something you will not forget, when the bulls’ golden mane is caught by the mountain wind swirling on the tops while he stands over his range looking for a worthy adversary.

Keep in the Loop.
